Lived Experience Networks

Lived experience is a term that is becoming increasingly popular and more and more people across the social care sector are hearing, using, and paying attention to it. Listening to and understanding the opinions and experiences of people where there may be barriers to participation is key to ensuring they are supported in the best way possible.

There are many different definitions of lived experience, but a useful one is this:

‘The experience(s) of people on whom a social issue, or combination of issues, has had a direct impact’.

The lived experience perspective can inform service design and avoid commissioners continuing to invest in services that may not work. Those with a lived experience bring a unique perspective that can inform how services work effectively for those they are designed to help. Co-production by those with lived experience means delivering public services in an equal and reciprocal relationship between professionals and those impacted by policies, plans and services.
